1.    1.     What is the SAP HANA deployment shell?

The SAP HANA deployment shell is a cloud-hosted service provided by SAP for developers to deploy HTML and JavaScript source to SAP HANA development edition.

2.     What is the benefit for developers?

Using the SAP HANA deployment shell enables developers to develop and deploy with the tool of their choice. This provides developers especially for the development of HTML/CSS and JavaScript a wide variety on tools to use for building native applications. In addition through the integration with Github developer can host and share their repositories with the open source community or within the team using private repositories.

3.     What are the drivers for SAP to provide development via additional tools?

SAP HANA Studio offers a comprehensive Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for developing SAP HANA based applications. SAP HANA Studio is the default tool for end-to-end development including modeling and building native objects like stored procedures or analytical models.

As an additional offering the SAP HANA deployment shell enables simple development of apps which focus just on building with HTML5 or JavaScript. Tools include: Cloud9, Appery.io, codiqa, …

4.     How does it work?

The SAP HANA deployment shell is available in the cloud and Github triggers deployments using so called service hooks. Each time a developer pushes a change to the Github repository the Dshell automatically deploys the code to the configured SAP HANA instance.

5.     What are the requirements and how can a developer get started?

Developers are required to have:

  • Github user and repository
  • SAP HANA developer edition (accessible in the cloud)

To get started please refer to the documentation on the SAP Developer Center (link)

6.     Is SAP HANA Studio still required, if yes for what?

The SAP HANA deployment shell only allows deployment of JavaScript and HTML/CSS for building native applications in SAP HANA. The SAP HANA Studio is required for all administration tasks as well for modeling and developing SQLScript procedures.

7.     How is the SAP HANA deployment shell supported?

Support is offered via the SCN community or via eMail to DSHELL@SAP.COM

9.     What should I do if my deployment is unsuccesful?

If a commit does not lead to a changed application, it might be that the settings in the deployment.json or the service hook URL is wrong. Or you simply have a syntax error in your code.

In that case simply try to execute the Service Hook URL in your browser. You'll get the error messages shown on your browser screen.

9.     How much does it cost?

Using the SAP HANA deployment shell is offered for free. Additional costs for running the SAP HANA developer edition and Github might apply. See www.github.com and http://scn.sap.com/community/developer-center/hana

Or you go to http://dshell.saphana.com and sign up for a 14 day free trial HANA development test and evaluation access using github and SAP HANA deployment shell technology.
